Summary

Karen Wynn Fonstad's THE ATLAS OF MIDDLE-EARTH is an essential volume that will enchant all Tolkien fans。 Here is the definitive guide to the geography of Middle-earth, from its founding in the Elder Days through the Third Age, including the journeys of Bilbo, Frodo, and the Fellowship of the Ring。 Authentic and updated -- nearly one third of the maps are new, and the text is fully revised -- the atlas illuminates the enchanted world created in THE SILMARILLION, THE HOBBIT, and THE LORD OF THE RINGS。
Hundreds of two-color maps and diagrams survey the journeys of the principal characters day by day -- including all the battles and key locations of the First, Second, and Third Ages。 Plans and descriptions of castles, buildings, and distinctive landforms are given, along with thematic maps describing the climate, vegetation, languages, and population distribution of Middle-earth throughout its history。 An extensive appendix and an index help readers correlate the maps with Tolkien's novels。

Must-have for Tolkien fans。 Maps of all sorts describing all of his creations。 I’m a city planner and his conceptions of the layout of cities was excellent。 Highly recommended。

I'm categorising this one as non-fiction due to the acknowledgement of the outer Primary World (e。g。 the coast of Nevrast is like that of Cornwall)。 I'm categorising this one as non-fiction due to the acknowledgement of the outer Primary World (e。g。 the coast of Nevrast is like that of Cornwall)。 。。。more

Yes, I read an atlas。 Yes, it was of a fictional world。 I’m excited for the TV show, sue me。This was a very interesting read, to be honest。 Obviously the star of the show are the maps, covering everything from the entire world through all of its ages, down to a floor-plan of Bag End and a map of the vegetation covering Arda in the First Age。 If that doesn’t mean anything to you, this book is definitively not for you。I’d say that my little flow chart is like this:-Read the Hobbit。 It’s fun and ac Yes, I read an atlas。 Yes, it was of a fictional world。 I’m excited for the TV show, sue me。This was a very interesting read, to be honest。 Obviously the star of the show are the maps, covering everything from the entire world through all of its ages, down to a floor-plan of Bag End and a map of the vegetation covering Arda in the First Age。 If that doesn’t mean anything to you, this book is definitively not for you。I’d say that my little flow chart is like this:-Read the Hobbit。 It’s fun and accessible and classic。 Readable even if you aren’t a LOTR fan。-If you watched the movies and really enjoyed them, and you’re generally ok with slightly denser fiction reads, then try out LOTR。 You might enjoy the style, and fleshing out the world of the movies。-If you enjoyed reading LOTR, then you might be ready to read the Silmarillion。 Just be warned that it’s not super narrative so you have to be pretty invested。-If you enjoyed the Silmarillion and also enjoy maps and geography, read this book。 It certainly won’t be very interesting/comprehensible if you haven’t read the Silmarillion (well I suppose the Hobbit/LOTR sections will be fine)。But yeah overall interesting。 The section outlining travel times in LOTR was particularly interesting, I was generally surprised by how fast everyone was going all the time。 I guess if you’re trying to prevent the apocalypse then you’re going to be going at a good clip。 。。。more

Excellent reference and a testament to the depth with which Tolkien built his world。 Really astounding。 5 stars because of the depth of Fonstad's analysis capture's Tolkien desire to paint every leaf of the forest and do so in a way that is both coherent and beautiful。 Excellent reference and a testament to the depth with which Tolkien built his world。 Really astounding。 5 stars because of the depth of Fonstad's analysis capture's Tolkien desire to paint every leaf of the forest and do so in a way that is both coherent and beautiful。 。。。more

Want to know where people are in the stories and what is around them? This book is it。 As a Cartographer by training I found the book useful when my brain was uncertain about exactly what was around characters geographically。

After so many years of wanting to read this it feels so good to have finally done so。I didn't really know what to expect from this, never having read an atlas before。 Some of it was what I thought it might be, other bits were not so much, but all of it was interesting and informative, and the maps are extraordinarily good and useful。I feel like this could be used as a really great companion for Tolkien readers as well as a good guide for writers of fantasy。Overall, I really enjoyed it and I have After so many years of wanting to read this it feels so good to have finally done so。I didn't really know what to expect from this, never having read an atlas before。 Some of it was what I thought it might be, other bits were not so much, but all of it was interesting and informative, and the maps are extraordinarily good and useful。I feel like this could be used as a really great companion for Tolkien readers as well as a good guide for writers of fantasy。Overall, I really enjoyed it and I have learned a lot and it was interesting to read something so different。 The only things that could make it better are:1) A word glossary defining some of the geographical terminology used。 Karen does elaborate on unusual words when they first come up but if they are ever used again then you have to remember what you read already or head over to Google2) Better sepearation on some of the closely lined journeys of the characters as their pathways can be quite hard to visually separate on occasion - mainly only on the world maps of many composite journeys though。 。。。more

A worthwhile companion to middle earth books。 Especially for someone as interested in cartography as I am。 She really knows what she is talking about。

I have not looked at this for some while, but it is at the crossroads of my academic identity。 It was Tolkien who sparked my interest in linguistics, which became my first undergraduate major。 His works are deeply rooted in his profession as a philologist, and this became my passion。 I was eventually drawn to environmental geography, which for a long time I considered unrelated。Tolkien did have a passion for geography, though, and took great care with the spatial arrangements of the lands he cre I have not looked at this for some while, but it is at the crossroads of my academic identity。 It was Tolkien who sparked my interest in linguistics, which became my first undergraduate major。 His works are deeply rooted in his profession as a philologist, and this became my passion。 I was eventually drawn to environmental geography, which for a long time I considered unrelated。Tolkien did have a passion for geography, though, and took great care with the spatial arrangements of the lands he created through his stories。 His cartographic aesthetic is so distinctive that it is now available in maps of the United States -- a form of geographic fan fiction。 I was reminded of this 。。。 and motivated to post this review 。。。 by a friend who shared a Tolkienesque map of Narnia (the fantasy world of his good friend C。S。 Lewis) and asked whether there is such a thing as a fictional geographer/cartographer。The good news is that yes, that certainly is a thing! I have just a few examples, including a dictionary of imaginary places, but I know this is a growing area of interest。 (It is not yet a specialty group of the American Association of Geographers, but it could be!)I once had a student who proposed an independent-study project involving the geography of Tolkien。 My dean was a rockhead (oops, I mean geologists -- we mean rockhead affectionately) who was trying his best to figure out what geographers do。 He was so skeptical of this proposal that he initially rejected it。 But he trusted me enough to give me a chance to explain why the student's proposal was valid geographic inquiry。 The good news is that I convinced him; the bad news is that the student changed his mind and did another project。 Had he done the work this book would have been a key source。 。。。more

An excellent companion for any reading of "The Hobbit" or the LotR trilogy。 The author's depth of knowledge on everything from weather patterns to geology makes it a bit dense at times, but really does help to flesh out the world of Middle-Earth。Also, if "The Silmarillion" ever felt too daunting for you, simply reading through the first half of this book is effectively like reading a cliffsnotes to the aforementioned book。 It's a great way to get the highlights, with visual aids, without all of An excellent companion for any reading of "The Hobbit" or the LotR trilogy。 The author's depth of knowledge on everything from weather patterns to geology makes it a bit dense at times, but really does help to flesh out the world of Middle-Earth。Also, if "The Silmarillion" ever felt too daunting for you, simply reading through the first half of this book is effectively like reading a cliffsnotes to the aforementioned book。 It's a great way to get the highlights, with visual aids, without all of the work。 。。。more

The one and only I used to own the original back in the early 80’s and it was a great resource each time I read the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings。 Unfortunately I lent to someone and never got it back。I am really happy with the digital version and recommend it to any fan of Tolkien。

。。。more

Really a fantastic and informative reference book! I tried to jump into “The Children of Hurin” after not reading Tolkien in a really long time and just had to put it down because it was way too incomprehensible。 I bought this and Robert Foster’s “Guide to Middle Earth” and I decided to re-read the Silmarillion to get the context of the three newer Christopher Tolkien books (“Children” as well as “Beren and Luthien” and “The Fall of Gondolin”) within the whole scope of Tolkien’s work before carr Really a fantastic and informative reference book! Words cannot describe the beauty, wonder, research, and sheer geekery that went into this book。 It has answers almost every question I could have ever asked about Middle Earth in a well-informed and believable way with absolutely brilliant maps - and detailed reasonings。 I cannot sing the author’s praises enough。
